FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Amazon Web Services to Invest $1 Billion in Marysville
MARYSVILLE – Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a global leader in cloud computing, has announced plans to invest $1 billion in the City of Marysville by 2030. This planned investment will bring cutting-edge cloud infrastructure to the area, create at least 25 direct jobs, and further strengthen Ohio’s position as a growing technology hub. AWS expects to begin operations at the new facility by 2027.
By 2030, AWS's planned investment toward data center expansion in Ohio is forecasted to surpass $23 billion. AWS selected Marysville as part of its continued investment in the region, capitalizing on the area’s skilled workforce, strong business climate, and infrastructure suited for high-tech growth. The planned development will provide businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies across the U.S. greater access to secure, scalable, and reliable cloud services.
As part of its investment in Marysville, AWS plans to provide more than $15 million in direct annual payments to the Marysville Exempted Village School District and City over 15 years, support infrastructure improvements benefiting the 33 Innovation Park, and build community partnerships with local nonprofit agencies.
“We are proud to reinforce our long-term commitment to the State of Ohio with plans to expand AWS cloud infrastructure in the city of Marysville,” said Roger Wehner, vice president of economic development at AWS. “Working with state and local leaders, we look forward to investing in the local community, strengthening its local workforce, enhancing educational opportunities, and contributing to the city’s long-term growth.”
“This investment by AWS represents a significant step forward for Marysville and Union County,” said Terry Emery, city manager for Marysville, Ohio. “It reinforces our city’s ability to attract leading technology companies and showcases our commitment to fostering economic growth and job creation.”
AWS has been steadily expanding in Ohio since locating its first data centers in the region 10 years ago, recognizing the state’s strategic location and commitment to innovation. Beyond the direct employment opportunities, this investment supports thousands of additional jobs in construction and other local industries. Through 2023, AWS’s continued investment in Ohio has supported more than 4,700 jobs and contributed an estimated $3.8 billion in total gross domestic product (GDP) to the state.
The growth of cloud computing and AI is driving demand across the data center supply chain, providing significant jobs in logistics, construction, security, and equipment maintenance. These projects add high paying jobs and boost local economies through growing tax bases and investment in critical infrastructure. AWS has already invested $10.3 billion into its Ohio data centers, further solidifying its role as a key economic driver in the state.
AWS’s expansion will play a key role in fostering the region’s technology ecosystem and support ongoing innovation and collaboration within the Beta District. By establishing advanced cloud infrastructure in Marysville, AWS will help accelerate technological advancements and attract additional investments, further solidifying the area’s role as a hub for emerging industries and high-tech development. This initiative aligns with the Beta District’s vision of driving smart mobility, artificial intelligence, and connected infrastructure projects that shape the future of technology.
In addition to job creation, AWS’s investment in Marysville will have economic ripple effects, supporting industries such as telecommunications, software development, facilities maintenance, and electricity generation within the AWS supply chain. AWS also collaborates with educational institutions in Ohio to provide workforce training, including programs designed to prepare students for careers in cloud computing, data center management, and cybersecurity. AWS has introduced Think Big Spaces in local schools, which are interactive STEM-focused learning environments that engage students in hands-on projects and introduce them to cutting-edge technology concepts. Through these programs, AWS is focused on inspiring the next generation of innovators by fostering curiosity and interest in STEM fields at an early age.
Amazon is also known for its commitment to sustainability and has pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its operations – including AWS – by 2040. As part of these efforts, AWS is investing in carbon-free energy projects to help power data centers and is also making them more energy efficient through innovations in power, cooling, and hardware design. The company is dedicated to working closely with local communities to ensure that infrastructure development benefits both residents and businesses alike. Amazon has invested in 23 wind and solar projects across Ohio, with a total capacity of 3.2 gigawatts (GW) of carbon-free energy. Once all are operational, the projects will generate the amount of energy needed to power the equivalent of more than 656,000 U.S. homes.
